South Whitstable is the part of town inland from the seafront, around South Street, where the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway once had a winding engine. The council's planning records include a conservation area named South Whitstable, so part of it carries extra planning care.
Terraces are a real part of the mix here. In the Gorrell ward the 2021 Census counted 4,766 households, about 30% in terraced houses and 30% in semis, with detached homes at about 21% and purpose-built flats at about 13%. Terrace roofs are narrower, so 2 to 3.5 kWp is common, and a rear slope that the street cannot see is often the easiest place for panels.
Duncan Down, which the town claims as England's largest village green at 52 acres, lies a little further south. The open edge of town means more sky, but also trees and hedges that cast shadows on low winter sun, so we look at shade month by month and not just at the roof direction.
